On January 18, 2017, Kim “Kenny” Weeks of New London, CT, was struck and killed on Route 85 in Waterford by a minivan operated by Shirley Langford, a nurse formerly of East Lyme, Connecticut. The minivan was owned by Ms. Langford’s business, Interim Healthcare of Eastern Connecticut. Immediately prior to the collision, law enforcement received numerous emergency calls of erratic operation of Ms. Langford’s minivan in the vicinity of Route 85. Recently, following a two-day trial, a New London County jury awarded Attorneys Kyle Zrenda and Tim Bouchard’s client $284,514.07 for injuries he suffered in a slip on a wet floor at work. Despite not putting up any warning signs, the defendant, a commercial cleaning company, argued that the wet floor was not dangerous, and should have been obvious to the client. Prior to joining Suisman Shapiro, Attorney Zrenda was an associate at Vigorito, Barker, Patterson, Nichols and Porter, LLP in New York where he focused his practice on construction site accidents, premises liability, motor vehicle accidents, medical malpractice, and health care law. Attorney Zrenda Richard S. Cody, an eastern Connecticut attorney with extensive experience handling matters in the municipal, land use & zoning, environmental and corporate arenas has joined Suisman Shapiro Attorneys-at-Law in the firm’s New London office. On May 15, 2018, Attorney John A. Collins, III, was sworn in as a Judge of the Gaming Disputes Court for Mohegan Tribal Court.
In its constitution, the Mohegan Tribe has given exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute involving or arising out of ’Gaming’ to the Gaming Disputes Court which consists of a Trial Court and a Court of Appeals. As used in the Mohegan Constitution, ’Gaming’ includes the development, construction, operation, promotion, financing, regulation and licensing issues, and includes Attorney Kristi D. Kelly of Suisman Shapiro Attorneys-at-Law recently prevailed in an appeal on behalf of a client for Veterans Disability Benefits filed with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The veteran applied for service-connected disability benefits in 2014 and was denied service-connection for his claimed ailments at that time. The denial was appealed in 2015 and has been pending for approximately two years. Attorney Kelly successfully obtained service-connection for all of his ailments and Mystic, CT – Tickets are on sale for the annual culinary adventure, Dinner In the Dark, taking place Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa.
Now in its fourth year, Dinner in the Dark is the major annual fundraiser for Sofia Sees Hope, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to funding research and providing education and support to families affected by blindness caused by Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) and other rare inherited retinal diseases.

Jay B. Levin The Disabled Workers Committee, Inc. has announced a $10,000 scholarship in honor of Matthew Shafner. The Committee is a Connecticut-based not-for-profit organization whose mission is to help impaired workers. Shafner, a nationally recognized attorney and former Chairman of the Disabled Workers Scholarship Subcommittee, passed away in September 2015. The scholarship will assist a child of a worker totally disabled in the workplace who lives in Connecticut go to college.
